How to Redesign a Website Without Losing Your Rankings

    By the DotNet Holdings team

The most expensive redesign mistake does not happen in design at all. It happens when the new site launches, the old URLs die, and years of accumulated search rankings die with them.

Why rankings evaporate

Search engines rank pages, not websites. Every old page that earned links and rankings holds equity at its specific address. Launch a new site where those addresses return errors and the equity does not transfer; it simply evaporates, and rebuilding it takes months you already paid for once.

The redirect map

Before anything launches, someone must inventory every URL on the old site and decide its fate: keep, redirect, or deliberately retire. Every page with traffic or links gets a permanent redirect to its closest equivalent, individually. Redirecting everything to the homepage tells search engines the old pages are gone, which is precisely the message you cannot afford to send.

Preserve what was working

  • Pull a list of your top pages by organic traffic before touching anything.
  • Keep the substance of pages that rank, even while redesigning their presentation.
  • Carry over page titles and descriptions that earn clicks, or improve them deliberately rather than regenerating them wholesale.
  • Keep the new site crawlable: content should not vanish behind scripts that search engines struggle with.

Launch week hygiene

Verify redirects the day of launch, not the week after. Submit the new sitemap. Watch crawl errors daily for the first month and fix what appears. A dip in the first weeks is normal while search engines reprocess; a dip that deepens through week six means something specific is broken and worth hunting down.

The quiet upside

Done properly, a redesign is not just damage control; it is an SEO opportunity. Faster pages, cleaner structure, and better content on preserved URLs regularly lift rankings within a quarter. The difference between the disaster story and the success story is almost entirely in the preparation.
