What Actually Goes Into the Price of a Website

    By the DotNet Holdings team

When website quotes differ by a factor of ten, at least two of the bidders are describing different projects. Knowing what actually consumes time in a web project is the best negotiating position a buyer can have.

The real cost drivers

  • Custom design versus template. Original design shaped around your brand and customers is a different craft from skinning a theme. Both have their place; they should not carry the same price.
  • Copywriting. Someone must write words that persuade. When it is missing from a quote, the plan is to reuse or improvise your content, and it shows at launch.
  • Page depth. Not the raw count, but how many genuinely distinct layouts and how much real content each requires.
  • Functionality. Forms are simple. Stores, portals, bookings, and integrations are software projects wearing a website costume.
  • Migration and SEO care. Preserving rankings through a rebuild is real, skilled work. Its absence from a cheap quote becomes visible in your traffic two months after launch.
  • The people. Full time senior staff cost more than anonymous subcontractors, and it shows in everything from schedule reliability to whether anyone answers in a year.

Why the cheap quote costs more

The $500 site is a template with your logo, your old text, and none of the work above. It usually resurfaces as a rebuild within two years, plus the quieter costs in the meantime: leads that never came, rankings never earned. Paying twice is the expensive way to buy a website.

How to compare quotes fairly

Make bidders itemize: design approach, who writes copy, what functionality is included, how migration is handled, what happens after launch. Identical looking totals decompose into very different projects, and the decomposition is where the honest comparison lives. A firm fixed quote against a written scope, like ours, is the cleanest signal that the vendor has actually thought your project through.
